Thank you!

Publishing is confusing.

(There, somebody had to say it.)

You're sure that YOUR path to being a published picture book author is out there... But how are you going to find it?

In this one day workshop, published authors who know the industry deeply will give you everything you need to make the right decision for you.

No judgement.

No trying to tell you which way is the RIGHT way.

You'll leave with confidence in the publishing path that's right for you... and clear next steps.

Sounds like what you need? Here's the details:

10am - 12pm (Alina Loux):
  • Learn the ins and outs of the 3 main publishing paths (self, traditional, hybrid), including the tradeoffs of each
  • Discover what path best fits your creative vision, goals, and resources

12pm - 1pm:
  • Break for lunch and enjoy the company of other creatives who love picture books.
  • (Bring your own lunch or walk to nearby restaurants/coffee shops)

1pm - 2pm (Brooke Baum):
  • Take the first step and learn how to query agents.
  • Learn how to craft your pitch - a critical skill that will serve you whatever publishing path you choose.

2pm - 3pm (Samantha Cora, Brooke Baum, and Alina Loux):
  • Ask Us Anything: When else can you ask 3 published picture book authors anything?
  • We're open books (pun intended) and ready to answer whatever questions you might have.

Meet the authors:

Alina Loux:
Alina Loux (she/her) had 3 goals as a kid: Become an author, an artist, and have a robot to clean her room. By some miracle, she's achieved all three goals. Alina is a multiple award-winning self-published author/illustrator (The Toothbrush Circus, If You Were the Moon, My Love, May You Always Find Wonder, and How to Watch Paint Dry), Best of Madison Best Local Author Silver Award Winner, owner of Little Story Squad, and a writing and publishing instructor at Madison College.
Brooke Baum:
Brooke Baum (she/her) is technically a grown up, but at heart she’s still the same kid who doodled in her notebook during math class and read Judy Blume way past her bedtime. She spent ten years as a children’s bookseller and an elementary school librarian before staying home with her young daughter. These days, Brooke is an author and illustrator of picture books and children’s graphic novels. She spends her time writing stories, reading books, drawing, and staying up way past her bedtime—all the things that got her into trouble as a kid. Only now, she calls it a career. Brooke is represented by Marissa Brown at Pippin Properties.
Samantha Cora:
Samantha Cora (she/her) earned a BA in English with a minor in art at a liberal arts college near the Fox Cities, and then launched her career as an award-winning journalist and then as a magazine editor for a national environmental nonprofit. She is now the author of multiple children's books (Waverly Braves the Breeze: The Story of a Galapagos Albatross, Wisconsin Wakes, Kaleidoscope of Colors, Oh Dear, and Goodbye, Hello), a freelancer of creative work, and the founder of the organizations Playful Acorns and Studi-yo.

Where is the workshop held?

Classes are held at Studi-yo Madison (725 Gilmore St):

Studi-yo is located on the lower level of Glenwood Moravian Community Church near the corner of Monroe and Gilmore Streets in Madison, WI. There is a wall of windows in the Studi-yo that face south toward a patio and greenspace to allow for natural sunlight. Note that this space does not currently have wifi, so think of it like a true creative retreat.

The October 3 workshop is no longer available for registration.
